Sur-Ron Rides. 2021.

Thursday 22nd July 2021. To 'The Warren' and back'.
Not being much of a heat lover, I headed out to Westbury with the Sur-Ron on the back of the Jimny very early today. The morning sun was just poking it’s head above the horizon as I reached the horse car park.
The first Byway (EDIN26) of the day was a smooth ride up the steep hill at Edington. This track is so easy these days when compared to the times we struggled back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, when it might take half an hour or more to get up there due to the gullies and obstructions!
It was good to see the TRF waymarks at the junction of Byways WLAV7A and 7B, heading towards 'The Warren'.... I rode to the A360 then turned round an headed back, turning left taking the Byway (WLAV34) back up the hill..... I had a spectacular 'off' at a fair old lick when I got cross rutted in the long wet grass. Incredibly, no damage was done to the bike apart from the handlebars twisting on the headstem. Also incredibly, no damage was done to the rider as well, apart from a stiff neck later in the day!.... I've taken this incident as a 'written warning' because it could have been much worse.
I wiggled around a few more Byways and UCRs until the bike got to 10% charge and went into 'limp mode'..... 25 miles was all the SurRon could manage on a full charge. However, I had low expectations to start with so it's good enough for now. Future mods will double that range easily and increase the performance as well.
I was extremely happy with the suspension despite it being budget Chinese stuff. I hit some pretty big potholes whilst looking at far more interesting things and the bike did not get out of shape at all.
All in all, I am very happy with the SurRon.

Thanks to the unusually nice weather this week, I decided to dig out the unfinished Sur-Ron project and took it for a couple of early morning rides.
I started the first ride at 06.00 from Calne and worked my way along the Byways to the Ridgeway, back down to Avebury, Beckhampton, the Roman Road to Morgan’s Hill, and down to the A4 and back to Calne.
The ground conditions were perfect and 27 miles were covered in the most gorgeous early morning sunshine.
I mis-managed my battery use and got back to base with 25% of the battery left…… Could have done more miles or gone faster!
The next day I started a bit later and headed South from Calne to the first Byway. ‘Heddington Steps’, once part of the Bath to London Turnpike which in the 1980’s used to be a real challenge to ride. On occasions the track would be so stepped, washed-out and slippery that we would have to abandon the attempt. Thanks to Wiltshire Council, it is now unrecognisable and passable with ease….. Too easy to be honest!
Arriving North of Devizes, I then made my way North East along Byways towards Beckhampton along a Roman Road. Crossing the A4, I then used the rest of the battery up using a network of Byways near Cherhill, Avebury, Yatesbury.
By the time I got back to Calne, I had covered just over 30 miles using a mix of 'Eco' and 'Sport' speed settings. 10% battery was left and the bike was in 'Limp Mode'. Perfect this time!
The Sur-Ron is a stunning little bike, so light and so much fun to ride. I must save-up my pennies for a long-range battery so it’s full potential can be released!............ So many projects, so little time!
